Hoima Stadium Construction Stands at 20%, Expected to Be Complete in Less Than 18 Months

Hoima City leadership has confirmed that the Hoima Stadium construction, being undertaken by Suuma Construction Company, stands at 20%. They assured the country that the project is likely to be completed well ahead of the planned timeframe of 18 months.
The 20,000-seater stadium, worth USD 129 million, will also include a 2,000-capacity indoor arena, training facilities, a swimming pool, and outdoor courts for netball, volleyball, among other amenities.
In July 2024, the government signed an agreement with Suuma Construction Company, a Turkish firm, to build the stadium on 34.9 acres of land in Hoima City.
Just months after the groundbreaking ceremony in September 2024, Hoima City leadership has confirmed that progress at the site stands at 20%—a sign that the facility might be completed well before the agreed timeframe of 18 months, according to Suuma Construction Company.
“The construction of Hoima Stadium is moving at a high speed. The company is working day and night, and their target is to deliver before December 31, 2025, which is the agreed time. Once it’s complete, CAF will come for inspection,” said Brian Kaboyo, the Hoima City Mayor.
Kaboyo added that while there were initial challenges with workers, these issues have since been resolved, and work is now progressing steadily. He encouraged the local community to embrace the stadium, emphasising its advantages for the region.
“There were challenges with workers some were lazy and remember, the company was given a strict timeframe. Over time, these challenges have been addressed, and the workers, along with the subcontractors, are now doing well,” Kaboyo said.
“I also want to implore the people of Bunyoro to embrace the stadium because of its advantages. The region is going to benefit business wise through investments and jobs. Moreover, after the AFCON 2027, Uganda can bid for other games, especially indoor sports, and we could host them in Hoima. So, we must protect its name jealously,” Kaboyo added.
Moses Muyambi, the Hoima City East Resident City Commissioner, assured the public and the company that security measures are in place to ensure smooth progress on the project.
“This is a mega government project. As security, we are ensuring that the site is fully guarded. Any issues with security could jeopardise the smooth flow of the works,” Muyambi said.
Muyambi also highlighted the need for the government to provide timely funding to the contractor.
“I want to thank President Museveni for the project and the government at large. Given the speed at which the contractor is working, if the government ensures all the necessary funds are disbursed in time, I’m very sure the stadium will be completed soon,” he said.
Even with the stadium still under construction, the city has already begun to see tangible benefits, including job creation and increased business for local facilities.
Leaders are optimistic that, after the stadium’s completion and the hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations, the region will gain even more visibility.
The Hoima Stadium project will feature a 20,000-seater stadium, a training facility, a 2,000-capacity indoor arena, a swimming pool, and outdoor courts for volleyball and netball, among other facilities.
