Tororo Police, in a significant breakthrough, have recovered a one-month-old baby girl who was abducted following the tragic murder of her mother, Immaculate Awori, in a hotel room last week.

The baby was found in Wakiso District, and two suspects linked to the heinous crime have been arrested.

Awori, a resident of Moriwa ‘B’ Village in Sere Sub-County, was killed on January 5, 2025, in a meticulously planned operation.

The baby was stolen and taken to Nakwero Village, Gayaza Parish, in Wakiso District. Upon investigations by the police, the child was found with one Nalunga Eziza, a 23-year-old woman, after a tip-off from Kanyanya Police to Tororo Police.

According to Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi South Police spokesperson, Nalunga had been lying to her boyfriend, claiming she was pregnant in an elaborate scheme to extract money from him.

Facing pressure from the boyfriend, who had heavily invested in her alleged pregnancy, Nalunga conspired to steal a child.

She allegedly paid her friend, Beatrice Awori, a 28-year-old resident of Magoro Village, Osia Parish, Osukuru Town Council, Shs 500,000 to help her execute the crime.

The duo convinced the victim, Immaculate Awori, that they had secured a sponsor to support her newborn baby. Under this pretense, they lured her to a hotel room where she was brutally strangled, and the baby was taken.

However, police efforts, facilitated by the cooperation between Tororo and Wakiso authorities, led to the recovery of the child.

Nalunga was apprehended with the baby in Wakiso District and later transferred to Tororo, where the infant was reunited with her relieved family.

Nalunga Eziza and Beatrice Awori have been arrested and are currently detained at Tororo Police Station. They will face charges including kidnap, murder, and child stealing.

Stephen Owere, the grieving husband of the late Immaculate Awori, expressed gratitude to the police for recovering his child.

“I want to thank the police for securing our child, though we have lost her mother. We now call upon any well-wishers to assist us financially to care for the baby,” Owere said.

Police investigations are ongoing to ensure justice is served, while the family begins the arduous journey of healing after the tragic loss of a wife and mother.
