ALEBTONG: Tragedy struck in Bediworo ward, Apala Town Council, Alebtong District, on the eve of Uganda's Independence Day when a 32-year-old man brutally killed his 82-year-old grandmother.

The suspect, Jimmy Omaa, reportedly followed his grandmother, Jane Acio, to her home armed with a sharp object.

According to witnesses, including resident Norman Ogwal Bilal, Omaa forced his way into the elderly woman’s hut, dragged her outside, and attacked her viciously, leaving her with severe head injuries.

“The incident happened around 7:30 pm. After the attack, Omaa fled the scene, but the community quickly mobilized a search party to apprehend him,” Ogwal recounted.

A few hours later, Omaa was caught by an enraged mob following a tense chase through the area. In an act of vigilante justice, the mob beat and stoned him to death. Acio died instantly at the scene due to the deep wounds inflicted during the attack.

North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, stated that preliminary investigations indicate Omaa was under the influence of drugs at the time of the attack.

Relatives reported a history of drug abuse and violent behavior from Omaa, who had been a constant source of trouble in the community.

“His father, Ogomo Walter, informed us that Omaa had been problematic for years. Homicide detectives and forensic experts from Alebtong District processed the crime scene and recovered the weapon used in the attack,” SP Okema said.

Both bodies were subjected to post-mortem examinations before being handed over to their families for burial.

Police are continuing their investigation into the mob killing of Omaa and have appealed for information from the public to identify those responsible for taking the law into their own hands.

Police records indicate that in the North Kyoga region, 60% of murder cases are linked to assault. Between July and September 2024 alone, the region recorded over 80 murder cases, most of them related to violent altercations.

SP Okema urged youth to avoid drug abuse and instead focus on constructive activities, such as participating in agricultural ventures or government programs like the Emyooga, Youth Livelihood Program, and the Parish Development Model (PDM), to secure their future and contribute to their communities' development.
