KAMPALA | The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Samuel Kazimba Mugalu, has expressed deep concerns over the widening gap between the rich and the poor, warning that the unchecked accumulation of wealth by a few while many continue to struggle could fuel anger and division in society.

Speaking to congregants at St Luke Church in Butabika, the archbishop highlighted the urgency of addressing these disparities, noting that they not only create resentment but also fracture communities.

"It is disheartening to see some amassing wealth while others go hungry," Archbishop Kazimba said.

"These disparities breed anger and discontent. We must reconcile as a nation and as communities. Those in power and positions of privilege must be considerate and care for others."

The Archbishop called on the church to play a central role in bridging these divides, emphasizing that compassion and care for the marginalized should be at the core of its mission.

"The role of the church is to heal, to reconcile, and to stand up for justice. We must embody love and compassion, especially for the marginalized. Misunderstandings and divisions within the church and society can only be healed through unity and forgiveness," he added.

Paul Mugambe, Mayor of Nakawa, echoed the Archbishop's sentiments, noting that corruption has become a pervasive issue that stifles progress in communities. Mugambe underscored the need to confront corruption head-on if peace and harmony are to be achieved.

"Corrupt officials are the reason we face so many problems, from poor service delivery to the breakdown of essential institutions. We must acknowledge the full extent of corruption in order to dismantle it," Mugambe stated. "We cannot achieve peace or harmony when corruption persists."

The Archbishop later visited Butabika Hospital, where he addressed the growing problem of drug abuse among the youth. He urged the young generation to resist the lure of drugs, which he warned was leading many into mental illness and despair.

"Drug abuse is destroying the future of our youth, leading many to mental illness and hopelessness," Archbishop Kazimba cautioned. "I urge you all to resist the temptation and choose a path of purpose and responsibility."

The Archbishop's call for reconciliation, compassion, and accountability comes at a time when Uganda continues to grapple with socio-economic disparities and widespread corruption, threatening the unity and progress of the nation.
