Threats of retaliation at Makerere after student suspended over sexual harassment

The Makerere University Law School has expressed concerns over reports of bullying and threats to harm among the students' body, a week after a sexual harassment incident.

In a statement issued on Friday, acting principal Zahara Nampewo noted that the School had received reports of students demanding silence as well as sending threats of retaliation against those that reported the case and the student leaders.
She also noted that vocal threats and abusive statements in the cyber space had been reported.
"The threats have included intent to rape, beat and cause harm, among others," Dr Nampewo's statement reads in part.
In the wake of the incidents, Dr Nampewo has reminded students that the university rules and regulations are very clear on bullying, noting that they would take action to ensure a safe and respectful environment that is conducive for all learners.
"While criminal offences are handled by police, we can make decisions where there has been a breach of our own code of conduct," Dr Nampewo stated.
"Makerere University shall deal seriously with those proven to be threatening or bullying colleagues and take corrective action as may be deemed necessary."
The Acting Principal asserted that investigations into the sexual harassment incident were ongoing, and appealed to students to remain peaceful and respectful to one another.
"We will continue to work towards a positive and purposeful environment that ensures
efficient teaching and learning."
According to the Makerere University Policy and Regulations Against Sexual Harassment revised in 2018, one found guilty of sexual harassment is put through a disciplinary committee.
Last week, Nampewo said Makerere recognises the direct and indirect, long- and short-term devastating effects of sexual harassment and have a zero tolerance to this conduct.
She said the institution was committed to tackling the vice she described as horrific and criminal.
"Makerere University has an approved policy against sexual harassment and we shall deal seriously with this vice and take corrective action as may be deemed necessary."
