NUP Unveils Tukamushaba as Western Uganda Vice-President
NUP's Rubongoya unveiled Tukamushabe, who was warmly welcomed by the party faithful in western Uganda

During the event, NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya urged district party leaders and foot soldiers from across 38 districts of Western Uganda to reject bribes and financial inducements from rival parties.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has introduced Jackline Jolly Tukamushaba as its new Vice-President for Western Uganda, replacing the late Jolly Kyomugasho Mugisha.

The announcement, made during a regional gathering, was met with excitement as party leaders and supporters from across 38 districts reaffirmed their commitment to mobilizing for change.

NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya urged members to reject bribes and financial inducements from rival parties, stressing the importance of integrity.

"One of the things that have been happening here in Western Uganda is a lot of voter bribery. The regime is now absent. But when it is a by-election, you start seeing these ministers coming up," Rubongoya said.

He criticized the ruling government for neglecting citizens outside election periods. "After the election, they disappear, but when it's a by-election, they start clearing roads, and they bring soap, salt, and bread to the people to vote them," he noted.

Bright Muhumuza, another NUP leader, reflected on past struggles, recalling the deaths of supporters during protests.

"Our 60 people died protesting that our president Kyagulanyi was arrested. We buried them and stayed silent," he said, drawing comparisons between the current government and previous regimes.

"Detention without trial. Even Amin gave 25 reasons why he removed Obote. Obote was detaining Ugandans without trying them in courts of law," he added.

Party leaders emphasized the need for greater mobilization ahead of the 2025/2026 elections.

"We want the team to have the zeal. Since the president has always talked of a protest vote, 2025/2026, we have a protest vote. We want to see a change in this country," said Julian Kabagambe, NUP’s deputy secretary for mobilization in Western Uganda.

She pointed to the determination of the NRA during its rise to power as an example to emulate. "The NRA was deliberate and intentional. We also want to have the same zeal they had," she said.

In her inaugural address, Tukamushaba pledged to redefine NUP’s role in Western Uganda and lead a movement for transformation.

"We want to make history in the Western region. We love Kyagulanyi Sentamu. We should be aggressive because this struggle doesn't require the weak," she declared.

As the opposition party prepares for upcoming elections, its leaders say they are determined to strengthen their presence in the region, positioning themselves as the vehicle for change.
