EC Boss Weighs In on NUP Constitution Amendment Stalemate

The delay in resolving the matter comes as Uganda prepares for future elections, with the outcome of the case expected to impact NUP's leadership and structural dynamics.

The Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, has clarified the status of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party’s constitutional amendment process, confirming that it is on hold due to a pending court case filed by some party members.

Byabakama revealed that the EC had received a formal request from NUP to amend its constitution.

However, the process was interrupted when certain members of the party raised concerns about internal management and subsequently filed a petition in court.

"Before we could determine the complaint, the same individuals took the matter to court," Byabakama explained, noting that this development legally binds the party to its current constitution until the judicial process is concluded.

The EC Chairperson said NUP must operate under its existing framework for the time being.

"Before a new amendment comes into place, you go by the current status quo. For now, we are going by the current NUP constitution until the court pronounces itself," he stated.

The delay in resolving the matter comes as Uganda prepares for future elections, with the outcome of the case expected to impact NUP's leadership and structural dynamics.

The impasse also highlights broader challenges in political party governance and the need for enhanced civic education to foster better understanding of constitutional rights and responsibilities among party members and the public.

The case remains a key issue to watch as NUP continues to navigate its growing influence in Uganda’s political landscape.
