In a heartwarming display of solidarity and festive spirit, supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Luweero District delivered a substantial Christmas package to political prisoners held at the party headquarters.

The donation, comprising food, clothing, and essential hygiene items, underscored the unwavering commitment of the NUP base to their incarcerated comrades.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Luweero NUP supporters, saw a diverse group of party members and volunteers gather early today to assemble and transport the carefully curated package.

The festive atmosphere, however, was tempered by the somber reality of the situation facing the imprisoned NUP members.

Many of those gathered shared personal stories of the detainees, emphasising their dedication to the party and their unwavering commitment to the principles of justice and equality.

“This Christmas, we wanted to remind our comrades that they are not forgotten,” stated Kabengano Ritah, the head of the Luweero NUP supporters.

“Their struggle for a better Uganda is our struggle. Their imprisonment is a testament to the challenges we face in our pursuit of a just and equitable society, but it will not break our spirits. This donation is a small token of our appreciation for their sacrifice and a symbol of our unwavering support.”

The contents of the Christmas package were meticulously chosen to meet the specific needs of the prisoners. The food items included staples such as rice, beans, maize flour, sugar, cooking oil, and locally sourced fruits and vegetables to ensure a nutritious and festive meal.

The delivery of the package was met with immense gratitude from the prisoners and a sense of renewed hope. Although direct communication was limited, the visible emotional responses of the detainees spoke volumes.

Several members of the visiting delegation recounted emotional exchanges and shared heartfelt messages of support and resilience exchanged through the prison gates.

“It’s more than just the material things; it’s the gesture of solidarity that means the most,” commented Margaret Nakintu, a volunteer who participated in the delivery.

“Seeing the smiles on their faces, knowing that they know they’re not alone, is incredibly powerful. It reinforces our belief in our cause and fuels our determination to continue fighting for their release and for a better future for Uganda.”

The Luweero NUP supporters emphasised that the donation was not solely a Christmas gesture but rather a continuous commitment to supporting political prisoners and their families.

They highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the families left behind, emphasising their commitment to providing sustained assistance to alleviate some of the hardships they endure.

They also announced plans for future initiatives, including fundraisers and advocacy efforts aimed at securing the release of all political prisoners and ensuring fair and just treatment within the Ugandan judicial system.

The action by the Luweero NUP unit serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of civic engagement
