The commissioner of Parliament and Nyendo Mukungwe legislator Mathias Mpuuga has called on opposition parties, both inside and outside Parliament, to unite and work together to rescue Dr. Kiiza Besigye from Luzira Prison before the situation escalates further.

Yesterday, Dr. Besigye was rushed to a private health facility in Bugolobi for specialized treatment after his health deteriorated significantly.

Speaking to journalists at Parliament, Mpuuga expressed concern that the current leadership of the opposition has failed to bring its members together and, instead, has fostered division over trivial matters.

“The current situation involving Dr. Besigye should humble us as the opposition and compel us to act. It is crucial that we come together to ensure no citizen of this country faces such inhuman and degrading treatment, which appears to be driven by revenge. If Dr. Besigye has committed a crime, there is a court system to handle it, and the regime has no justification for his mistreatment,” Mpuuga stated.

He urged opposition leaders to set aside their grievances and focus on rescuing Besigye, prioritizing his health and safety over petty politics.

“We are deeply divided as an opposition, and anyone who presents a differing view is often met with resistance. The leadership within and outside Parliament must rise to the occasion. We need to demand Dr. Besigye’s immediate release, protest his detention, and ensure that his health is restored. He is being persecuted simply for opposing the current regime,” Mpuuga emphasized.

Mathias Mpuuga, who also serves as a parliamentary commissioner and is the Member of Parliament for Nyendo Mukungwe, has joined civil society organizations, religious leaders, and international human rights activists in calling for the immediate release of Dr. Kiiza Besigye, who was reportedly abducted along with his associate Obedi Lutale in Nairobi, Kenya.
