Police in Luweero District are investigating a suspected murder and the disturbing of a grave in Kakooola Village, Sekamuli Parish, Bamunanika Sub-county.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, February 9, is still a shock to the local community.

According ASP Sam Twiineamazima, PRO Savannah Region, preliminary findings indicate that Richard Hogoson, a 78-year-old British national married to Regina Nakanwagi, passed away on February 4 at New Mulago Hospital.

He was laid to rest in Kakooola Village. However, a week later, at around 2am on February 9, villagers heard suspicious activity at the burial site.

Witnesses claim that unknown individuals were attempting to exhume Hogoson’s body. Alerted by the noise, residents mobilised quickly and managed to apprehend the suspects before notifying the police.

Twiineamazima adds that, by the time Police arrived at the scene at around 6:13am, one of the suspects, identified as Mpagi Lutwama, had been severely beaten by the angry mob.

Police rescued the suspects, but Lutwama was later pronounced dead at Bamunanika Health Centre III due to injuries sustained from the assault.

Police have since arrested two suspects to assist in the ongoing investigation.

The grave was found disturbed, with one side of the coffin exposed, though the body remained intact and authorities are working tirelessly to establish the motive behind the attempted exhumation.

ASP Twiineamazima has confirmed the incident, assuring the public that investigations are ongoing.

He urged communities to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to report suspicious activities to the authorities.

As inquiries continue, police have registered two cases: one for suspected murder and another for disturbing the peace of the dead.

Authorities have called for calm as they work to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the case.
