Muhoozi Warns Against Efforts to Destabilise Uganda
The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has issued a stern warning to those attempting to destabilise the nation.
He stated that the military will deal with such individuals "firmly, without fear or favor, according to the law."
The General also raised concerns over a recent legal ruling that could pose a threat to national security and disrupt the operations of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
Addressing the 44th Tarehe Sita celebrations in Kyotera District, Gen. Kainerugaba expressed his alarm over the ruling, which concerns the prosecution of military personnel and civilians under military law, and warned that it could undermine the UPDF's discipline and command structure, which are essential to its mission.
Although Gen. Kainerugaba, who also serves as the Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, did not provide details about the ruling, he called it “unfortunate and quite unacceptable,” expressing concern that it could lead to a crisis within the country’s security apparatus.
He urged President Yoweri Museveni, who attended the celebrations, to urgently address the issue.
“We shall not abandon or compromise the UPDF's historical mission under any circumstances,” Gen. Kainerugaba asserted, emphasising the need for a disciplined and united military force.
In response to the legal concerns, the UPDF is collaborating with the Attorney General and the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs to pursue amendments that clarify the role of military courts, ensuring that the military can perform its duties without disruption.
Despite the ongoing legal debates, Gen. Kainerugaba reassured the public of Uganda's security, highlighting the army’s commitment to peace and stability.
The General also spotlighted recent successes in addressing insecurity, particularly in Karamoja, where peace has been largely restored.
He pointed to the significant decline in criminal activity in the region, including the arrest and elimination of key criminals.
Furthermore, efforts to prevent the rearmament of local militias, such as the Karachuna warriors, continue.
“We have eliminated or arrested most of the hardcore criminals who were disturbing the peace in Karamoja and neighbouring communities,” he stated, adding that the region is now seeing economic growth and increased tourism.
During the event, Gen. Kainerugaba outlined key military operations, including ongoing efforts in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and the transition of Ugandan forces in Somalia.
He also highlighted the UPDF’s significant role in securing Uganda and contributing to peace across Africa.
The 44th Tarehe Sita celebrations, which also commemorated Uganda's journey towards socio-economic transformation, were held across several districts, with Kyotera hosting the main event.
Themed “Celebrating Pan-African Solidarity and the People’s Sacrifice in the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy for Socio-economic Transformation,” the celebrations honoured the UPDF’s contributions to the nation’s growth and stability.
