The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje has commended the significant strides made by Muslim families in advancing education within their communities.

During a thanksgiving ceremony for Prof Ahmed Katalemwa Kateregga at his family residence off the Kampala-Entebbe Highway, Mubaje praised the community’s progress in breaking historical stereotypes of illiteracy among Muslims.

In his remarks, Mubaje acknowledged the growing number of Muslims attaining high levels of education, including doctorates.

"I now stand here to challenge whoever thinks that there are no Muslims qualified for any post in this country; we can point them out," he stated, emphasising the shift in societal perceptions.

The event, which celebrated Dr. Kateregga’s academic achievements, saw several prominent figures, including family members, UMSC officials, and educators, attending.

Dr. Kateregga, who holds a PhD in Education Management from Makerere University, is the son of the late Haj Muhmood Kateregga Namuguzi, a respected former UMSC Executive member.

Sheikh Mubaje also paid tribute to the late Haj Kateregga and his wife, Hajjat Farida Kateregga, for their unwavering support for education and their significant role in advancing Muslim interests in Uganda.

The Mufti highlighted the importance of formal education in leadership roles, urging Muslims to attain at least A-Level, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degrees, either in Islamic theological studies or secular fields.

"The goal is to ensure that Muslims in leadership positions are well-equipped to serve their communities effectively," said Sheikh Mubaje.

He emphasised the need for Muslims to continue prioritising education, blending Islamic principles with practical life skills.

Speeches were also delivered by several other dignitaries, including Hajjat Zulaika Kibirige, Headteacher of Kawempe Muslim Secondary School, Sheikh Ismail Lukebelwa from UMSC, and Dr. Kateregga’s academic supervisor, Prof. Dr. Jude Ssempebwa. All highlighted Dr. Kateregga’s dedication to his studies and his role as an inspiration to others.

Dr. Kateregga shared his own academic journey, which began in primary school and culminated in his doctoral degree.
