Nakasongola Honours Komuhangi in Special Council Sitting

Ms Komuhangi, who passed away in India after a prolonged illness, served as Nakasongola’s MP from 2011 to 2021 and was widely remembered for her commitment to the district and Uganda at large.
The Nakasongola District Council held a special sitting, chaired by Deputy Speaker Sarah Nakate, to pay tribute to Margaret Komuhangi, the former Woman Member of Parliament for the district.
Ms Komuhangi, who passed away in India after a prolonged illness, served as Nakasongola’s MP from 2011 to 2021 and was widely remembered for her commitment to the district and Uganda at large.
During the session, Councillor Adrian Kiiza from Migeera Town Council proposed naming a road in Kigalambi, Nabiswera Sub-County, after Komuhangi.
However, the council deferred the decision, suggesting that an urban road in a more prominent area would better honour her legacy.
The matter was referred to the district works committee for further deliberation.
The council commended Komuhangi’s selfless contributions, including her mentorship of local leaders and her advocacy for the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Notable among her achievements were saving Ekitangaala Transformation High School from demolition and ensuring access to water for residents from her dam during dry seasons.
Sam Kigula, the district LC5 Chairperson, urged the NRM to formalise a system for honouring its distinguished members.
He also called for representation from the party’s Secretariat at events celebrating the achievements of prominent leaders like Komuhangi.
Nakasongola County MP Noah Mutebi Wanzara expressed disappointment over the government’s decision not to accord Komuhangi a state burial.
He referenced a similar oversight in 2018 following the death of Peter Nyombi, a former Attorney General and another prominent figure from Nakasongola.
“These two leaders served Uganda selflessly. While we appreciate the government’s support for her send-off, a state burial would have been more fitting,” Mutebi said.
Mutebi also urged the government to assist Komuhangi’s family in completing her unfinished matrimonial home in Waluse, Migeera, as a gesture of gratitude for her service.
On the issue of naming a road in her honour, he advocated for selecting one in urban centres such as Migeera or Nakasongola Town Council, where her impact would be more publicly recognised.
“Why honor Hon. Komuhangi with a road in Kigalambi? If I die, would you name a road in my village, Nalubobya, despite my service? Let us honour her legacy in areas where her contributions are visible to the public,” Mutebi remarked.
Komuhangi’s legacy as a champion of development and a transformative leader will be remembered as she is laid to rest on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at her matrimonial home in Walusi, Migeera Town Council, Nakasongola District.
