These rules advocate for dignity, transparency, and accountability in prison systems, setting a standard that the UPS is committed to upholding.
By equipping clerks with skills to maintain accurate and efficient records, the initiative seeks to improve administrative processes, facilitate informed decision-making, and ensure greater transparency.
Reliable record-keeping is critical in safeguarding the rights of prisoners, as it helps track inmate details, monitor detention conditions, and address grievances promptly.
“Effective records management is at the heart of a transparent and accountable justice system, this training is not just about efficiency; it’s about building a more humane and just environment for those in our care.” UPS posted on X
Participants gained hands-on experience in modern record-keeping techniques, aligning the prison system with international standards.
The training is part of ongoing efforts by UPS to modernize its operations and reinforce its commitment to a prison system that respects human dignity.
The collaboration with UNODC underscores the importance of partnerships in strengthening justice systems and promoting human rights. As Uganda continues to reform its prison system, initiatives like this serve as a testament to the country's dedication to aligning with global human rights standards.
UPS has pledged to implement lessons from the training across all its facilities, ensuring that the principles of the Nelson Mandela Rules are embedded in daily operations. This commitment not only enhances efficiency but also reinforces Uganda’s broader efforts toward a more just and equitable society.
