UAE Donates 700,000 tonnes of food to Kiryandongo refugees
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has contributed over 700,000 tons of food and various other items to refugees in the Kiryandongo Settlement Camp.
The delivery took place on Saturday, with the UAE ambassador to Uganda, Abdalla Hassan AlShamsi, present, alongside State Minister of Youth, Balaam Barugahara, who represented Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.

This generous act by the UAE government is anticipated to greatly assist the more than 100,000 Sudanese refugees living in Kiryandongo.
In her remarks delivered by Minister Balaam, PM Nabbanja expressed heartfelt thanks to the UAE government and its people for their generosity and support.
Additionally, the ambassador laid the foundation stone for a new hospital block with a capacity of 25 beds within the refugee settlement.
He praised the UAE government for this facility, stating that it will significantly improve healthcare services for the refugees, primarily from Sudan.
"This new block will improve the overall situation in the camp, providing better medical care and living conditions for those seeking refugee," the ambassador remarked.
He also conveyed his appreciation to President Museveni and the people of the UAE for their compassion and dedication to aiding vulnerable communities around the globe.
"I'd like to thank the United Arab Emirates government for donating to the refugees in Kiryandongo, over 700,000 tons of food, assorted items, cooking oil, sugar, sanitary parts reusable, wash and use again, soap, and so many other items. And in a special, I'd like to thank the UAE government for allowing to build a hospital with 25 bed unit capacity in Kiryandongo refugee camp," he said
"As you are aware, the government of Uganda is hosting, only in this camp, close to 100,000 refugees in Kiryandongo alone. But in total, we have over 1.5 million refugees, country, in all our camps. The refugees in Kiryandongo immediately come from Sudan, South Sudan, and the DRC. So I need to thank the President for creating that involvement that accommodates and welcomes everyone in our country. I think this is what we should all be doing," he added.
Kiryandongo refugee camp has seen a significant influx of refugees, with numbers reaching 96,860 as of March 31, 2024.
The UAE's donation is anticipated to make a tangible difference in the lives of those seeking refuge in Uganda.
Furthermore, Al-Shamsi inaugurated a transformative water project in the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, ensuring improved health and well-being for the community.
