Deputy IGG visits Kiteezi, vows to hold officials accountable for garbage tragedy
The Deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG), Ms Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe, has vowed to take action against the officials who failed to play their role that resulted into the collapse of Kiteezi landfill.
In a proactive move to address the recent disaster at the Kiteezi landfill, Twinomugisha made a site visit this morning at the scene.
The purpose of her visit was to assess the situation firsthand and ensure that any government officials responsible for negligence are held accountable.
The Kiteezi landfill, which serves as the primary waste disposal site for Kampala, experienced a garbage slide that resulted in significant environmental and community concerns.
The incident has drawn widespread attention, highlighting potential lapses in waste management and oversight.
During her visit, Deputy IGG Twinomugisha emphasised the importance of accountability in public service.
She assured the residents and concerned parties that her office would conduct thorough investigations into the incident.
If evidence of negligence or failure to act is found, she vowed to take appropriate action against the officials involved.
“We will not tolerate any form of negligence in government service. If our investigations reveal that any officials failed in their duty to prevent this disaster, they will be held accountable,” she said.
Twinomugisha's visit also included discussions with officials from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) who were present at the scene.
Statements from KCCA staff on the ground were recorded, marking the beginning of a formal inquiry into the events leading up to the garbage slide.
The Deputy IGG's commitment to transparency and accountability has been welcomed by the community and environmental advocates alike.
As the investigation proceeds, there is hope that this incident will prompt a re-evaluation of waste management practices in Kampala to prevent future occurrences
