Tayebwa constructs Shs2.7bn church for Mitooma Catholics
The handover commenced with a solemn mass of thanksgiving presided over by the Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese, Lambert Bainomugisha.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa on Sunday handed over St Charles Lwanga Church to Kigarama parishioners in Mitooma District.
The handover commenced with a solemn mass of thanksgiving presided over by the Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese, Lambert Bainomugisha.
The consecration of the Catholic church, which stands at 83 percent completion, was carried out by the archbishop with support from Mr Tayebwa
Fr Bainomugisha lauded Tayebwa for his benevolent act and encouraged the faithful to follow in his footsteps by contributing to the community and serving God in their individual capacities.
"I want to thank Mzee Daudi Bangirana, the father of the deputy speaker for him, and thank the deputy speaker Tayebwa for this beautiful church of St Charles Lwanga," he sai.
"Each of us should emulate him and give back to community where you can."
Mr Tayebwa dismissed claims that he used taxpayers money to support the construction of the new house of God.
"This church isn't complete yet yes, but we are not fundraising, we already have the money to complete it, those that are saying I am using government money, no I am not," Tayebwa said.
"I was able to raise Shs1.7 billion in an hour with my friends that include [Geoffrey] Kirumira, Hamis Kigundu, Sudhir Ruparelia, Ben Kavuya, and Amos Nzei and that's how we started this church construction."
The friends Tayebwa cited are all A-lister business moguls with vast interests in the capital Kampala and beyond.
Speaking to the congregation, Mr Bangirana said: "My father died at 35 years and I am 80 years, my wife is 74 years, so we want to thank God for life and our son and that's why I want to give thanks to God."
The father of 12 children, takes great pride in his offspring. Among them, eight are sons including the deputy speaker.
He beamed with joy as his long-cherished desire came to fruition, mirroring the happiness reflected in the smiles of his son, the deputy speaker, and his wife.
