LIRA CITY | At least three people have been confirmed dead following a Saturday road crash on the Lira-Soroti Road.

The accident that occurred at Abutadi Trading Centre involved minibus Coaster registration UBL 851Z and a Fuso truck registration UBA 200J.

It is alleged that the driver of the Fuso, who was speeding, lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the Coaster, leaving three dead on the spot.

The Coaster belonging to Dokolo School of Nursing and Midwifery was transporting Lango Province football players from Dokolo town heading towards Lira City while the Fuso, loaded with passengers returning from a traditional marriage ceremony, was traveling towards Dokolo.

The deceased have been identified as 5-year-old Anuari Musafiri Suwedi, and Suhaila Musafiri Suwed, 9, who had accompanied their father to watch a football match between Lango Province team and Dokolo Select Tea

Police said the identity of the third victim is yet to be established.

Police spokesperson for North Kyoga Region Patrick Jimmy Okema said several passengers aboard the two vehicles sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital where they are currently receiving medical attention.

“The accident scene was promptly attended to by the Division Police Commander (DPC) of Lira-City East, accompanied by the Division Traffic Officer of Lira-City Central Police Station (CPS)," he said.

"The deceased has been transported to the mortuary at Lira Regional Referral Hospital, where post-mortem examinations will be conducted."

Okema said the driver of the Fuso that is believed to have caused the accident surrendered himself to Kaberamaido Police Station in Kaberamaido District, about 70km away from the accident scene.

“We have him in custody and he is expected to be transferred to Lira City CPS for further questioning and to assist with the ongoing investigation. The driver for the minibusw is receiving medical attention at Lira Regional Referral Hospital,” SP Okema said on Sunday.

Preliminary investigations have linked the accident to reckless driving by the Fuso driver.

"We appeal to all drivers and road users to always respect road traffic regulations to avoid such occurrences,” says Okema.
