Activists call for climate financing to reduce carbon emissions

The minister of state for environment, Beatrice Atim Anywar has emphasized the need for climate action stakeholders to support local communities around natural resources with carbon financing to reduce green house carbon emissions and mitigate adverse effects of climate change

She said this during the East Africa carbon market forum in Kampala.

Article six (6) of the 2015/2016 Paris Agreement allows countries to among others transfer carbon credits earned from the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to help countries meet their climate targets and voluntarily cooperate to unlock financial support for developing countries to tackle climate change.

However, its implementation is still lacking.

Anywar says there is need to increase financial capacity for climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience starting with local communities.

"The ministry of water and environment is enhancing its capacity to reduce greenhouse emissions and manage their effects, however, there is need to increase financial capacity, support individuals and communities to fight climate change and achieve net zero emissions. We must also conserve the environment to earn from it," Anywar said.

In the face of devastating effects of the changing patterns of climate like floods, drought and mudslides some of which are brought about by human activities, Lily Ginsberg -Keig, the policy manager with Bezero carbon reiterated the need for governments to develop environment supportive regulatory framework that will aid in reducing green house gas emissions.

Brian Isabirye, the commissioner of renewable energy in the ministry of energy and mineral development asserts that adapting to renewable sources of energy will save forests and wetlands there by cutting heavy pollution and inturn cut global emissions.

"We should encourage climate resilient solutions, adapt to new energy and transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and carbon financing opportunities will enable clean energy cooking. We need the new energy policy will also recognize the need to support carbon transition in Uganda," Isabirye reiterated.
