The suspects involved in the vandalism of electricity equipment were identified as Moris Mumbere, 26, Benard Bwambale, 22, and Nyasio Kule, all residents of Nyamwamba Division in Kasese Municipality.
In a separate incident, Julius Ndyabirimire, Wisley Mumbere, 19, and his mother, Ms. Naume Mbambu, were also arrested on suspicion of livestock theft.
SP Nelson Tumushime, speaking to the press, confirmed the arrests, noting that investigations are underway. “Investigations have commenced, and after gathering all necessary evidence, the suspects will be produced in court,” he stated.
Local leaders expressed concern over the crime surge in the area. Mr. Kigutiha Jafari, the Local Council 1 chairperson of Basecamp Lower, said these incidents have brought fear and insecurity to his community. He warned, “We advise these thieves to surrender and renounce this vice, or they might as well prepare their wills and funeral budgets.”
The persistent vandalism of electricity infrastructure has become a significant issue in Kasese. Kambere Edson, the Acting CEO of Kilembe Mines Ltd., highlighted the ongoing losses. “Since 2023, we have lost over 80,000 meters of wire, valued at over 80 million shillings,” Kambere explained.
He added that if the trend continues, it will not only increase the cost of revamping Kilembe but also hinder the government’s ability to attract new contractors for future projects.
Harriet Mbambazi, a livestock owner in the area, shared her own experiences with theft, explaining that she has lost three cows over the past year. “This is deeply frustrating and a significant financial loss,” she said.
Authorities in Kasese are urging the public to report suspicious activity and are calling for increased community vigilance to prevent further crime in the region.
