Eight suspects break through toilet louvers at Sheema police station
Police in Sheema Municipality have launched a search for eight inmates who broke out of a cell in Sheema Central Police Station.
According to Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, the suspects escaped at around 3:20am on August 1 after breaking through the aluminum louvers on the toilet window.
The suspects that escaped from detention have been identified as Jocknius Akampa, Hakim Matovu, Aggrey Mukasa, Asingwire Musinguzi, Ambrose Byamukama, Benson Mpumwire, Ashraft Tugume an Clinton Accum.
Tumusiime said out of the eight suspects, six were facing theft charges, while the two had been arrested on charges of murder and aggravated robbery.
Mr Sam Orikunda, the Sheema Deputy Resident District Commissioner, said seven police officers who were on duty at night have been detained and charged with neglect of duty.
"The suspects took advantage of the new police cells because the central police cells have just been constructed so they could have used the chance of the would be loopholes to sneak through," Orikunda added.
The mastermind of the escapees is said to have been arrested on Wednesday, July 31, and was detained for murder allegations, all the eight suspects are still at large as the search is on.
