Kabale Kiosk Operators Face Eviction from Hospital Grounds

The Kabale Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Nyahuma, is cracking down on kiosk operators near Kabale Regional Referral Hospital. Citing concerns about drug smuggling, security threats, and unlicensed alcohol sales, Nyahuma has ordered all kiosks to be vacated within 21 days.

According to Nyahuma, the kiosks have become a haven for criminal activity. He alleges hospital staff are using them to store stolen medication, while criminals target staff and students due to the kiosks' presence. He further claims some kiosks have transformed into unlicensed bars.

These accusations stem from complaints received by the RDC's office from both hospital management and the public. Nyahuma emphasized that the kiosks lack valid operating licenses from the Kabale Municipal Council, adding weight to his eviction order.

The directive forces the town clerk to oversee the removal of all kiosks within the designated timeframe. Nyahuma also proposed the establishment of an official hospital canteen to better serve patients' needs.

However, the kiosk operators are resisting eviction. Led by Allen Ahimbisibwe, they argue they have legal agreements with their landlords regarding the kiosks' construction. The short notice to vacate is causing significant hardship, particularly for those who obtained loans to operate their businesses. Ahimbisibwe fears eviction will not only result in job losses but potentially push some kiosk operators towards criminal activity.

The kiosk operators are pleading with the RDC for a six-month grace period and potential relocation to another designated area. This situation presents a complex challenge. Balancing economic opportunity for the kiosk operators with the hospital's need to address security concerns and improve patient care is paramount.
