Concerns over fluctuating River Rwizi water volume
Over the years, the fluctuations in the water volume of the River Rwizi have sparked concern among stakeholders and those who rely on the river.
Environmental advocates have lamented the ongoing deterioration of River Rwizi, the primary water source for the Ankole districts.
In response to this escalating issue, an annual initiative known as the Save River Rwizi Marathon has been making significant strides in addressing the situation.
Stakeholders assert that the post-marathon activities and proceeds are aimed at promoting alternative livelihood programs that facilitate individuals in refraining from encroaching on the river.
According to Joseph Asasira, the Mbarara City environmental officer, said the river is gradually losing its depth, posing a threat to not only Mbarara but also several other districts that rely on it as their primary water source.
Those encroaching on the river banks should evacuate before they are apprehended. The quality and quantity of the water have significantly deteriorated over time.
With the annual Save River Rwizi Marathon in motion, stakeholders affirm that the implemented interventions are coming to fruition, highlighting specific areas that have undergone restoration.
Caroline Mwebaze, the deputy team leader, Victoria water management zone, acknowledged the strides the save river Rwizi marathon since 2022 has made towards the restoration of the river.
“We get proceeds from the marathon and use them for the restoration activities," Mwebaze said.
"We already have the hotspots identifies in the river Rwizi management catchment plan and from the proceeds of the previous marathons we have restored the Rwemigina wetland in Mbarara City.”
About 1,000 people participated in the annual Save River Rwizi marathon, and for the previous two years, each participant purchased a kit at Shs25,000.
This year’s marathon is slated for July 28 at Booma ground. Part of the money has been utilised to establish waste bankers across the city to manage polythene bags and plastics, plant trees (bamboo), and carry out awareness programmes, among others.
Mindset and behavioral modification, persistent awareness-raising, and stringent enforcement must be heightened to regain and safeguard the depleting resource, and the Save River Rwizi Marathon is aimed at that.
