A ten-day nationwide awareness campaign against post-partum haemorrhage (excessive bleeding after childbirth) was launched yesterday at Kigorobya Health Centre IV in Hoima City.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Bunyoro Local Maternity and Neonatal System, has seen enthusiastic participation from district leaders and the Kingdom of Bunyoro.

The campaign comes in response to Bunyoro's alarming maternal mortality rates for three consecutive years.

"Bunyoro has faced the highest institutional maternal mortality for three years, along with performance management challenges and high teenage pregnancy rates, especially in Masindi," said Dr Diana Atwine, permanent secretary at Ministry of Health.

In addition, challenges in performance management and a high prevalence of teenage pregnancies, particularly in Masindi, have underscored the need for urgent action.

This initiative aims to address these critical issues and improve maternal health outcomes.

The campaign has been commended for the proactive involvement of organizers, local leadership, health workers, Village Health Teams (VHTs), and community health workers, all working together to reduce maternal mortality and enhance overall health in the region.

The launch was shared on social media by Dr Atwine, highlighting the importance of community engagement in tackling these pressing health challenges.

The Bunyoro region hopes this campaign will lead to significant improvements in maternal healthcare and set a precedent for similar initiatives across the country.
