Museveni to receive award for COVID-19 fight
President Museveni will receive an award for his contribution in combating the spread of COVID-19 pandemic at the First International Post-Covid Conference in Toronto, Canada.
The pandemic devastated the world between 2020 and 2022, forcing global order to its knees with worldwide lockdowns.
In Uganda, President Museveni was widely commended for leading a combative task force and mobilising the nation to check the spread of the deadly respiratory virus that claimed a reported 5.94 million people between January 2020 and December 2021.
The First International Post-Covid 19 Conference 2024, which will take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from July 11 to 13, is organised by Livelihood Development International Initiatives under the theme "Evaluating the impact of Covid-19 on humanity."
Several other individuals from Africa and beyond whose efforts were outstanding in the fight to check the spread of Covid-19 will be recognised.
Dr Specioza Wandira Kazibwe, former Vice President of Uganda, will receive an award for her commitment and dedication in the pandemic, while Dr Monica Musenero, the Minister of Science and Technology, and Prof Bruce Kirenga will be awarded for providing expertise and contributing strategies in combating the virus.
Health minister Ruth Acheng will be awarded for her commitment in the mobilisation of the Covid task force,Esther Mbulakubayo for her role in health communication and management, Dr Emmanuel Katongore, the co-founder of Quality Chemicals, and Prof Patrick Ogwang for developing the Covidex medicine that that is said to have saved lives and gave people confidence in local herbs.
The Uganda People's Defence Forces will also be recognised for its outstanding role, specifically Lt Col Henry Kyobe and Francis Okello.
The UPDF was the forefront in ensuring lockdown adherence and in the distribution of relief items, ensuring law and order during the lockdown, and executing several other tasks.
Vice-President Jessica Alupo is expected to lead Uganda's delegation to Canada.
This first international post COVID -19 conference strives to bring together global experts from different global communities to explore what needs to be done differently, and prepare the global community to respond to future global shocks and emergencies in a unified well-coordinated effort.
The conference will be a platform to discuss policies that facilitate mobilization and distribution of resources, addresses social and structural inequities/inequalities in the world, and investment in human resource capital development.
Additionally, the conference will permit experts to decipher their thoughts to find solutions to strengthen health infrastructure, enhance the distribution of medicines, propose a sustainable pandemic financing, and harmonised pandemic and emergency communication, and equitable diffusion of technological innovations, among others.
