Remembering Agau: All set for this Saturday's memorial match for former Onduparaka player

Preparations are in high gear for the AGAU Rashid Memorial Football Match, taking place this Saturday at Abba Bet Green light Stadium in Arua.

The memorial match is to feature a showdown between West Nile Province and Acholi Province, to celebrate the legacy of Rashid Agau, one of the finest talents from the Arua, who passed away in August 2024.

Affectionately known as T9, Agau played for several top clubs in Uganda, including Onduparaka, Arua Hill SC, and Maroons SC.

He passed away at Arua Regional Referral Hospital after a brief illness.

Agau was not only recognised for his remarkable skills on the pitch but also for his generous contributions to his community.

In addition to his athletic achievements, Agau was deeply committed to the growth of football in West Nile. He took on mentoring roles, dedicating time to grassroots programs and nurturing young talent throughout the province.

Despite his accomplishments, Agau remained humble and focused on making a positive impact. He used his resources to support local initiatives, sponsor sports programs, and assist families in need.

His kindness and generosity earned him widespread respect, and his philanthropic legacy will be remembered by those who benefited from his support.

To honor his memory, the West Nile Players Association, in collaboration with the West Nile Region Football Association and Onduparaka Football Club, has organised this memorial match.

The event aims to pray for the late hero while raising funds to support the projects and family he left behind.

Organizers are reaching out to well-wishers for contributions, with a target fundraising goal of Shs 35,644,000.

Speaking to Hussein Ezzy, the coordinator for the memorial match, he confirmed that preparations for the event are in final stages.

"The host team is ready to welcome Acholi Province. Everything is progressing smoothly, and the team on the ground is doing an excellent job to ensure everything goes according to plan," he said.

He emphasised that the purpose of the event is to raise funds to support Agau's family and the projects he initiated, such as the construction of a house.

Ezzy urged well-wishers and football stakeholders to contribute to the fundraising efforts to assist with the event and Agau's ongoing projects.

Biography of Agau

Agau was born on August 21, 1990, in Obolokofuku Central, Tanganyika Ward, Arua Central Division, to Ayub Brahan Ayila and the late Afsah Chandiru.

He is survived by two children: Hashim Ayub, his firstborn, who was born on October 1, 2016 (currently in Primary Two), and Mo Sallah Rashid Ayub, born on March 13, 2018 (currently in Top Class).

Agau began his education at Najah Muslim Primary School and continued at Arua Public and Swalihin Primary Schools in Arua.

He completed his O-Level studies at Najjah Muslim Secondary School, St. Joseph's College Ombachi, and Old Kampala, before pursuing his A-Level education at St. Mary Kitende.

Agau, embarked on his football career at a young age, participating in the Kampala Kids League, Gothia Cup in Sweden, Trivoli Cup, Arua Kids League, and the Football Festival in Denmark.

At the club level, Agau played for Elgonia Football Club, Onduparaka FC, Arwam Roses, and Arua Central FC.

He also had stints at Arua Hill SC, Maroon SC, and Doves All-Stars.
