Speaker Among: I still have one more term to lead Parliament
I have heard some people say I resign, resign and go where? - Anita Among
The Speaker of Parliament, Ms Anita Among, has slammed "self-seekers' who engaged in recent 'March to Parliament' protests and assure that she will resign like others are demanding.
"I have heard some people say I resign, resign and go where?" Among said.
"I still have one more term, when I finish my five years in the next term, I will give it to my young brother Thomas to take over, it's not good to cling to power."
The Speaker made the remarks on Sunday while attending a Thanksgiving ceremony for her deputy Thomas Tayebwa, who was handed over St Charles Lwanga Catholic Church in Kigarama in Mitooma District to Kigarama parishioners.
She also asked the President to protect the legislative arm of government.
"Uganda has three arms of government and the Legislature which I head needs to be protected your excellency, please protect the legislature," Among said.
"I have seen people marching for corruption, demonstrating, [these] are self-seekers, these are people who don't want us to respect our values and as Members of Parliament we will stand by the decision we made."
The Speaker also defended the August House, arguing that corruption doesn't start from Parliament since members of Parliament are not accounting officers.
"These Members of Parliament are not accounting officers, the stealing as the LC chairman said does not start from Parliament, lets not demonize Parliament," Amond said.
