The administration of Lira University in Lango Sub-region is concerned that their budget for the financial year 2024/2025 has been slashed to only Shs35.7bn.

Presenting their budget estimates before the Budget Committee chaired by MP John Twesisgye, Lira University vice chancellor Japer Ogwal said the budget cuts will have adverse effects on critical areas and activities like research, internship placement, school practice, delay in the completion of the main block among other activities.

Prof Ogwal said out of the Shs2bn requested for research only Shs500 million has been provided something that will hinder the the University from competing with others in research.

The administration of Lira University also revealed to legislators other challenges including the limited infrastructure, facilities like theatres to facilitate the teaching hospital, lack of innovation and staffing gaps that stand at 73 percent among other.
