Three days after robbing a businessman of Shs100m, the robbers aimed for another heist, but their 40 days were up and six were gunned down while two remain on the run

The disease that will eventually kill a man begins as an appetite, they say. For six gang members of a notorious gang who were killed on Monday as they attempted to rob over Shs500 million from a bank client along Acacia Mall, the age old saying can now only play in their wake.

On Monday afternoon, police gunned down six thugs who targeted an unnamed businessman person who had withdrawn money from a bank branch at Acacia Mall.

The tragic end for the sextet came barely three days after another heist in which they attacked a businessman in traffic and ran off with Shs100 million.

The six, who were armed with pangas, were killed from different locations, including near Total Acacia, Kasasiro Stage along Old Kira Road, and near Tagore Apartments along Kayunga Road.

“It was an intelligence-led operation after police got a tip-off that robbers had planned to rob a client of the bank. As they planned to rob the victim, our officers noticed and started the disruptive operation,” Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said on Monday.

Identities

This website has separately obtained the identities of the deceased, who are said to be from areas around Mulago.

They have been named only by aliases, including Dady Easy, Adam, Jamilu Lukwago, Khalid, Francis Zanda, and Ibrahim.

This website has also separately established that two suspects escaped unhurt on Monday, including one Sadiq and Sharif, with the former believed to have been the mastermind of the foiled robbery.

Sources privy to the ongoing investigations have confirmed that the six who were gunned down yesterday and the two who are still on the run were part of the gang that attacked a businessman in Maganjo on January 10 and robbed Shs100 million.

In the earlier incident, a group of panga-wielding men trailed Fred Tibamanya, who had just withdrawn cash from Centenary Bank’s Kawempe branch, and pounced on him at Maganjo along Bombo Road during a traffic jam.

Police said on Monday that Tibamanya, who was driving a Toyota Harrier, registration number UBN 789W, was attacked and his windscreen smashed before a bag containing Shs100 million was robbed.

The thugs would later drop the bag along Kyadondo Road in Kampala.

Sources privy to the ongoing investigations into the Monday shooting have told this website that the six who were gunned down and the two who are on the run are repeat offenders, who have in the past been charged with robbery and released on bail by courts of law.

The line of investigation lends credence to reports that most criminals in Kampala are repeat offenders who are either released on bail by courts of law or get out of prison after serving their respective sentences.

Many of these learn new tricks of robbery while in prison, where they join hands with hardcore criminals to plan new missions.

Investigators say this gang changed its modus operandi to start using pangas, targeting businessmen withdrawing cash from the bank or moving to deposit money.
