Murder Suspect 'Dies by Suicide' in Kaliro Police Custody

Police in Kaliro District are investigating the suspected suicide of Stephen Matagala, a 60-year-old man who allegedly ended his life while in custody.

According to police reports, Matagala was arrested on January 10, 2025, and was being held at Kaliro Police Station pending further legal proceedings.
The tragedy occurred in the early hours of January 13, 2025, when Matagala reportedly hanged himself inside his cell using a string.
Fellow detainees reportedly woke up after hearing sounds of distress and attempted to intervene. They untied the string and brought him down, believing he was still alive.
Despite their efforts and the intervention of police officers on duty, Matagala was pronounced dead.
ASP Michael Kasadha, the spokesperson for Busoga North Police, confirmed the incident and emphasized that investigations are underway to determine how Matagala accessed the string used in the act.
"A coroner visited the scene to conduct examinations, and a postmortem was carried out before the body was handed over to the family for burial," Kasadha stated.
The police have vowed to thoroughly investigate the circumstances of Matagala's death, with a focus on identifying any lapses in security or negligence.
Authorities have expressed their condolences to Matagala's family and pledged to ensure transparency in the investigation. Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
