Tororo mother killed as her newborn baby is abducted

The deceased was lured by a group of people who said wanted to support her newborn child.
A tragedy has unfolded in Morwa "B" Village in Greater Paya Subcounty in Tororo district where 28-year-old Immaculate Awori, a mother of five, was allegedly strangled to death, and her one-month-old baby abducted.
According to the deceased's husband, Steven Owere , his wife was lured from their home by a group people who claimed to be charity workers claiming to be assisting families with newborns.

“The group came to my home three times, accompanied by our village health team leader, Charles Ochieng. Since they were all women and with my leader, I trusted them,” Owere lamented.
Awori’s body was later discovered in a hotel room at Pararoma hotel in Tororo Municipality.
The perpetrators remain at large, with the whereabout of the newborn baby unknown.
Another resident of Paragangi village in paya sub county, recounted her narrow escape from a similar incident.
She was allegedly invited to meet the so-called donors at Paya Health Center III, only to become suspicious and leave when things seemed off.
With the crime linked to a group of unidentified individuals allegedly posing as charity workers, targeting young mothers and their infants, locals are worried.
“We are terrified,” said local leader Wilfred Oketcho. “We don’t know who these people are or their intentions. We need immediate action to protect our communities.”
Assistant District Commissioner Aidah Kigen has urged residents at this trying moment to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals.
“Strangers should not be allowed into homes without consulting local authorities,” she said.
The Tororo District Police Commander, Sadic Sabila, confirmed that investigations into the matter are underway. Some suspects, including hotel manager, have been arrested.
“We urge locals to cooperate with the police as we continue with the investigations,” Sabila stated.
Meanwhile, local leaders have implemented community-driven safety measures.
District Chairperson John Okea announced a new initiative requiring homesteads to form security groups of ten households to monitor and report suspicious activity.
The horrific incident have left the district population in shock and mourning, with residents calling for swift justice and improved security.
“ Some of the local residents in the district must be connected with this crime,” said Richard Owere Machika, a resident.
“ Locals are demanding for answers and action to stop these crimes.”
