In response to the recurring seasonal disasters in Kasese District, the government has issued a strong recommendation for residents living in high-risk areas to relocate to safer lands.

The call comes after repeated incidents of floods, mudslides, and landslides that have claimed numerous lives and caused substantial property damage.

Last May, the region was struck by devastating mudslides and landslides, resulting in the tragic loss of 13 lives. The government's latest advisory aims to address these calamities head-on and prevent further tragedies.

Muhindi Eriphaz, Chairperson LC5 Kasese District, highlighted the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the need for immediate action to safeguard lives and properties.

“We cannot continue to lose lives and property over issues that can be mitigated through proactive measures,” Eriphaz stated.

Peace Mutuuzo, the Minister of State for Gender, echoed these sentiments, stressing that the ongoing disasters are unacceptable under the government’s watch.

“People living in dangerous areas must vacate to safer locations,” Mutuuzo urged. She also called for a shift away from outdated beliefs that discourage relocation due to ancestral burial sites.

In addition, ICT State Minister Godfrey Kabyanga pointed to changing climate patterns as a significant factor contributing to the disasters. He emphasized that while some of these changes are beyond control, certain corrective measures could mitigate their impact.

Kasese Municipal Mayor Chance Kahindo supported the government's call for relocation, underscoring the need for residents to heed these recommendations to reduce the risk of future disasters.

As the rainy season approaches, the government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of Kasese residents by promoting proactive measures and addressing the root causes of the region's seasonal disasters.
